Explorer Programme Ideas

Here are some quick programme ideas some last 5 mins others you can build a whole series of evenings around. If you have any comments on them or any programme ideas of your own please let us know the more of you that use and add ideas the more helpful the resource becomes.

These games are taken from a variety of sources but you should adapt them to suit your Explorer where necessary.

  • Spoons

    Spoons Relay Race. This is a very energetic and fast game and can be played inside or outside.

    Equipment :  Spoons 1 per team plus 2 extra, chalk, bowl to put spoons in

    Time :     10 - 20 mins

    Instructions :

    To start off with divide the unit into 3 or 4 teams and get them to number off. Get each team to move to a corner of the hall or spread out along the edges. In front of each team draw a chalk circle (or use something to mark a small area like a hoop). Place all the spoons in a bowl in the centre of the room. Call out a number and the Explorers run to collect a spoon and deposit in their circle. They can only carry 1 spoon at a time and the winning team is the one who gets the most spoons. Once all the spoons have gone reset the game. The team who wins the most times are the champions. 

    You can change the game to make it easier of harder by putting more or less spoons in, Calling more explorers from each team to get spoons, allowing spoons to be taken from teams as well as the centre, making the playing area bigger, or using different items other than spoons.

  • Human Dominoes

    Human Dominoes is a game for the whole unit to show that everyone has something in common with the others in the unit.

    Equipment :  None

    Time :     10 - 30 mins

    Instructions :

    Gather all the explorers together and set them the challenge that they have to form a line of dominos linked by what they have in common. Start with the leaders to show the prinicple of the game. The first person says "On my left hand side I am {Insert Charactristic or likes} and on my right and side I am {Insert Charactristic or likes}". These characteristics can be colours, pets, football teams, hobbies or anything you can think of. Next 2 other people from the unit who share one of the charactistics stands on the side that is relavent. The new people to join then say the phrase as well including the characteristic that they joined for and a new one for the open side they have. Once everyone has joined up you need to find something in common between the 2 ends so they can join up and show that everyone in the unit has something in common. 

    Keep reminding the group that they all have things in common and do not single people out for being different.

  • Over or Under

    Over or Under is a game that is quick and easy to organise

    Equipment :  Long piece of rope

    Time :     10 - 20 Min's

    Instructions :

    Get 2 leaders to hold the rope at opposite ends of the hall with the rope at a suitable height. Then get all the Explorers to stand one one side of the rope. Explain to the Explorers that they need to run towards the rope and either go over or under the rope without touching it depending on what the leader shouts. If the touch the rope they are out and the winner is the Explorer who manages not to touch the rope.

    You can add things to this like reversing the calls so under means over, lower and raise the rope, and maybe move the rope like a skipping rope and get the Explorers to pass through.
